Lindisfarne Castle
Lindisfarne Castle crowns a rocky outcrop on Holy Island, off the Northumberland coast. Built as a small Tudor fort to guard the harbour, it was transformed in 1903 by the architect Edwin Lutyens into a romantic holiday home for the founder of Country Life. Inside, snug rooms and rounded arches feel worlds away from its military past, while outside a walled garden by Gertrude Jekyll sits below the crag, all cut off twice a day by the tide.
