Allen Banks & Staward Gorge
Allen Banks and Staward Gorge is the largest area of ancient semi-natural woodland in Northumberland, draped over the steep sides of the River Allen. A Victorian lady laid out winding walks, a tarn and rustic bridges here in the 19th century, and the paths still lead down to the river and up to the wooded crags. High above the gorge stand the scant ruins of Staward Pele, a medieval fortified house guarding the valley.
