King John's Hunting Lodge
King John's Hunting Lodge presides over the market square at Axbridge in Somerset. Despite the royal name, it was built around 1460 as a prosperous wool merchant's house, long after King John's reign. The three-storey, jettied timber frame later served as shops and an inn before passing to the National Trust. It now houses a free local history museum, with displays running from Neolithic finds to the 20th century.
