Brean Down Fort
Brean Down Fort sits at the seaward end of Brean Down, a dramatic limestone headland thrusting into the Bristol Channel in Somerset. Built in the 1860s as a Palmerston fort against French invasion, it was rearmed during the Second World War, and its gun batteries and barracks still stand. Reaching it means a bracing walk along the down, with wide sea views, nesting birds and rich coastal grassland the whole way.
