The Longstone, Mottistone
The Longstone is the Isle of Wight's solitary megalithic monument, a tall sandstone standing stone with a second, fallen stone at its foot, set on the slopes near Mottistone. It dates from the Neolithic period and was later used as an Anglo-Saxon meeting place, giving the village its name from the old words for speaker and stone. Reached by a walk up through the wooded estate, it has a quiet, weathered presence among the trees.
