Sutton Hoo
On the banks of the River Deben in Suffolk, Sutton Hoo is the site of one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made in Britain — the burial of an Anglo-Saxon king beneath a great ship mound, unearthed in 1939. The extraordinary treasure found here, including the famous helmet, rewrote understanding of the so-called Dark Ages and revealed a civilisation of astonishing sophistication. Walking the burial mounds above the tidal estuary, the silence and scale of what once happened here is genuinely moving.
