Newtown
Newtown was once the Isle of Wight's most important medieval port and a notorious rotten borough, but the sea and a French raid left it to dwindle to almost nothing. What remains is a beautiful national nature reserve of tidal creeks, salt marsh and ancient meadows, threaded with quiet lanes and boardwalks. Presiding over it all is the tiny eighteenth-century Old Town Hall, marooned in fields where streets once ran.
