Mount Grace Priory
Mount Grace Priory is the finest surviving Carthusian charterhouse in England, founded in 1398 at the foot of the Cleveland Hills. The monks here lived as hermits, each in his own two-storey cell with a private garden, meeting only for occasional worship. A reconstructed cell shows exactly how that austere, self-contained life was led, while the ruined church and great cloister sit in peaceful woodland and gardens.
