Hardy Monument
The Hardy Monument crowns Black Down, high above the Dorset coast near Portesham. It commemorates Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, Nelson's flag captain at Trafalgar, who held the dying admiral aboard HMS Victory. The stone tower, built in the 1840s, can be climbed when open for one of the finest panoramas in the county, reaching across heathland and Chesil Beach to the sea beyond.
