Segontium
Segontium was founded around AD 77 as the principal Roman fort in north Wales, garrisoning roughly a thousand auxiliary troops and staying in use until the late 4th century. Its low stone foundations, now neatly preserved in turf above Caernarfon, mark out the commander's house, barracks, a strongroom and bath house. It is a rare, walkable glimpse of Roman frontier life, set on a hill with views over the town and the Menai Strait.
