Fan Bay Deep Shelter

๐Ÿ—ฟ Monument

Fan Bay Deep Shelter is a Second World War tunnel complex hewn into the chalk cliffs above the Strait of Dover, just a short walk from the South Foreland Lighthouse. Used by the Royal Artillery to protect the vital Dover Strait shipping lanes, the tunnels were sealed after the war and only rediscovered and excavated by National Trust volunteers in 2012. Stepping underground here connects you viscerally to the wartime urgency felt at this narrowest, most watched stretch of the English Channel.

Best for Second World War history enthusiasts and anyone moved by the story of Dover's wartime frontline.
