Castle Drogo
Castle Drogo in Devon occupies a dramatic position on a rocky outcrop above the Teign gorge — and it is the last castle to be built in England, completed in the 1930s to a design by the great architect Edwin Lutyens. Commissioned by Julius Drewe, a self-made grocery magnate who believed he was descended from a Norman baron, it is part ancestral fantasy, part architectural masterpiece: all granite walls, soaring staircases and the sense of a man willing the Middle Ages into existence by sheer force of will.
