Bridgewater Monument
The Bridgewater Monument is a stone tower at the heart of the Ashridge Estate, raised in the 1830s to commemorate the Duke of Bridgewater, the canal pioneer. A tight spiral stair of some 170 steps climbs inside to a viewing platform that clears the surrounding beech canopy. From the top the Chiltern woods and downs roll away in every direction, making the effort worthwhile on a clear day.
