Montacute House
Montacute House is a glorious Elizabethan mansion in Somerset, built in the 1590s from golden Ham Hill stone and barely altered since. Its long east front is one of the finest in England, and inside, the great gallery stretching the full length of the top floor displays a collection of Tudor and Jacobean portraits from the National Portrait Gallery. The formal gardens and surrounding parkland add to a sense of aristocratic calm.
