A la Ronde
A La Ronde near Exmouth is one of the most curious and delightful buildings in the National Trust's care โ a 16-sided cottage built in the 1790s by two unmarried cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, inspired by the 6th-century Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna following their European Grand Tour. Inside, the diamond-shaped rooms contain extraordinary shell-encrusted decorations created by the cousins themselves, including the famous shell gallery. It is wonderfully idiosyncratic and wholly unique.
